kamasutra

The Kama Sutra is the best-known of ancient love manuals, a 1,500-year-old Indian text which

explicitly details both the mechanics of lovemaking and a code of behavior which applies to

everything surrounding it. Originally translated from Sanskrit in 1883 by Sir Richard F. Burton,

the intrepid Victorian explorer who also translated The Arabian Nights and discovered the

headwaters of the Nile, it is thought to have been compiled from a much older oral tradition by

Vatsyayana, a Benares religious student and wise man living in 5th Century India.

Meaning literally “aphorisms on love,” the Kama Sutra is divided into seven parts, 36 chapters

and 1,250 verses. Beyond the numerous sexual positions it delineates (“Cobra,” “Black Bee,”

“Tigress”), it was also the lifestyle magazine or self-help text of its day, recounting kissing

techniques, recipes for aphrodisiacs and a host of advice on seduction, courting, marriage and

courtesans – not to mention “classes of women fit and unfit for congress.” It also offered

instruction in “the 64 arts”: poetry, music, dance, art, conversation, homemaking, the sciences,

magic and many others.
